Classic Game Emulation

The best ways to revisit old favorites, and then some.

Here's a selection of my personal recommended emulators, primarily for systems from the 7th generation and below. Keep in mind that emulators for more "recent" consoles (like PS3 and Xbox360) may require a fairly powerful computer to run at playable speeds.

Some of these even have support for RetroAchievements if you want a new way to engage with older games!!

The Emulation General Wiki is a good resource for information and updates on various emulators and their development, especially for ones not listed here.

I cannot provide links to game ROMs, BIOS, or firmware files. You're on your own for those.

Multi-system Emulators and Frontends

While these a convienent option for many, standalone emulators may still be preferable for some systems.

Author's Choice Bizhawk - Emulates a wide variety of systems with minimal setup, and has an accesible UI for those who just want to play instead of spending time setting things up. Has RetroAchievements support.

RetroArch - The most popular multi-system frontend, available for a wide variety of platforms. Does require downloading emulator "cores" (can usually be done through the in-app interface), and some additional configuration might need to be done AFTER loading games. Very customizable, but not exactly the most user-friendly. Has RetroAchievements support.
